Unless the Twins have some video of Hank making those statements, I doubt they have a case here. Besides, everyone and their mother knows that the Twins are shopping Santanna and that the Yankees and Red Sox have been talking to them about him. This is not a case where an owner, out of no where, says "Hey, Babe Ruth is going to be a Free Agent after this season and we would have to have him play for us next year."

Brass tacks, the Twins have been playing the Yankees and Hank called them out on that. That's what has the Twins' twisted here...and, to that, I say "Aw, Gee...too bad.

Ugh, God, Hank really, truly never shuts up. Does he have to answer every phone call and give EVERY detail of what the Yankees are doing behind closed doors? How can Cashman operate with this guy revealing everything he's doing?

I said it on another blog, but I'll repeat it here: someone needs to build a time machine so we can travel back and get Steve Swindal a cab.

I think every Redsox Fan are discounting Jeter and doesn't get credit He deserve for those 4 WS.. Redsox Fans and Yankees haters says Oneill, Tino, and Brosious won all those championship not Jeter.

Yes but Brady plays in System by implemented by Bill Bellicheat..

I would say same thing about Brady.I think Brady terribly overrated. Without Deion Branch,Ty Law, and Charlie Weiss and Romeo Crennel, Brady's is an average QB.

Francesa thinks that Hank is going to be alot of fun to listen to and talk about. He feels that is going to make him a major star with more potential than George. Go figure,

Sounds like Jeter envy to me. Jeter has performed well and in the clutch. Can ARod say that? LMAO! Long after Jeter's in the HOF haters will still be gnawing away on the overrated bone of theirs.

Here are some stats for the hater's to wrap their little minds around:

.500 All Star Game BA
1996-AL-ROY
2000-ML-AS MVP
2000-ML-WS MVP
etc.
etc.

These little diatribes only prove one thing: the guy's a Yankee and doing his job well.

Jeter is hated by just about everyone outside the NYY family, mostly due to jealousy. All his offensive acclades and WS rings aside, and viewing it purely on a baseball standpoint - his defense is subpar and he has limited to no range gloveside. There are intangibles that don't go into zone ratings and whatnot, but he isn't nearly the defensive SS he once was (and that wasn't the best of the best either). The articles and posts just tried to say it in the most demeaning, anti-yankee way possible.

From Sosh on Hank that Yankees have shot to get Santana
Redsox Fan says Hank are tampering and should get fined by Mlb

86spike

And let's face it, we're the best able to handle the kind of contract (extension) Santana will be after."

Motherf*cker, that is tampering! I wonder if Theo or Smith (or even Minaya) will raise a complaint since Hank is obviously trying to communicate to Santana that the Yanks will pay him more than anyone else.

We're going to have the best pitching by far in baseball in two or three years and we'll be tough this year.

So Hank has yet to be schooled in the TINSTAAPP Theory, has he? You'd think he'd at least have a slight memory of when the Mets were going "to have the best pitching by far in baseball" when they had Jason Isringhausen, Bill Pulsipher and Paul Wilson tearing up the minors.

A**hat.

Bankshot1

D*mn straight it is. IIRC Santana is still under contract to the Twins.

If Selig had an ounce of balls he'd at least tell the Trust Fund kid to STFU and take a draft pick or two.

No I gave it a degree of thought.

Or maybe MLB should just fine Hank $25K or $100K. I'm sure something of that magnitude will certainly make him think twice about tampering with another team's player.

Tom Ricardo

What? Is there any case at all where the commissioner took draft picks away as a punishment or is it just something that happened to the Patriots so you figure it is a standard punishment in all sports?

hey, we can finally get back on topic with a new pile of quotes from Tamperin' Hank:

Daily News
QUOTE

"I think the Twins realize our offer is the best one," Steinbrenner said Wednesday in a telephone interview. "I feel confident they're not going to trade him before checking with us one last time and I think they think we've already made the best offer."

Steinbrenner said the offer "does not include two of the three young pitchers" - Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy, from a group that also includes untouchable Joba Chamberlain - "but it's still the best one. And let's face it, we're the best able to handle the kind of contract (extension) Santana will be after."

Motherfucker, that is tampering! I wonder if Theo or Smith (or even Minaya) will raise a complaint since Hank is obviously trying to communicate to Santana that the Yanks will pay him more than anyone else.

QUOTE

There has been only minor dialogue between the Yankees and Twins lately, Steinbrenner said, but that figures to heat up soon. "We're not desperate, so we're not going to chase anything," Steinbrenner said. But, he added, "In the next two weeks, we're going to have to get everything done.

"I either have to do it (a Santana deal) or don't do it, same thing for the Red Sox, I guess," Steinbrenner added. "I think the Twins would like to keep him, so I don't think there's any hurry on anyone's part. It all depends on what he asks for in an extension. You obviously have to be very careful with pitchers, for obvious reasons."

again with the singular tense, Hank?

QUOTE
"Each team is in it for what they can handle. We have great young pitching, that's the main plan. Do we want to put Santana in there, who's 29 (in March), to be an ace for a few years?

"I know a majority of fans don't want to lose Hughes."

Steinbrenner reiterated that he would be delighted to get Santana but also happy to "stay the way we are.

Asshat.

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/yankees/2008/01/03/2008-01-03_yanks_we_have_shot_at_johan_santana.html

Apparently the Yanks aren’t out of it yet. The sad thing is every time I hear another GM speak out about their desire and effort to get Santana my first thought is it’s always a PR stunt so they can tell their fan base, Hey, we tried. It almost makes me wish Bill Smith would talk a little bit more about the proceedings. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want him to turn into a blow hard like Hanky, but I at least wish he would give us something. If only to keep other GM’s in line.

this is the translation to hankys words this morning…..

“i am pleased to announce that our plans of stealing santana from the twins is going very smooth. it should happen within the next couple weeks. yes we are giving up hughes but look. we arnt giving anyone else up (melkey marquez… come on thats nothing big atleast atm…) santana is much better then hughes.. period.. its ok i got the money thing handled, i told santana that we will sign him to that 140 mil contract (tampering, but who cares im hank i can do whatever i want). bill smith is a rookie gm and he isnt going to make sure he gets full value for santana, hes going to trust me to give him full value…”

theres my interpritation.. like it? lol

Here's Redsox version

I'm John Henry and owner of Boston Redsox. The Boston Redsox are New America's team. I can give Twins Coco Crisp and rest of below average pitching prospects in a deal for Johan... Theo get me Johan now.

Thursday roundup
Thursday, January 3rd, 2008
http://nc.startribune.com/blogs/neal/?p=304

I just realized there’s only six weeks until pitchers and catchers report. What an offseason…

No major Johan Santana news, but reports elsewhere pretty much gist with what has been written here recently, that the Yanks, Red Sox and Mets are the three main teams involved in the sweepstakes, that the Mets won’t have to give up Jose Reyes, the Yanks won’t have to give up Phillip Hughes and Ian Kennedy in the same package and different trade models remain in play with the Red Sox.

While there were some suggestions that the Yanks had pulled their deal off the table and were backing off, indications I received from the Twins were that the Yanks remained clearly in the picture. This story backs that up. It always helps when Hank Steinbrenner speaks up:

“I think the Twins realize our offer is the best one,” Steinbrenner said Wednesday in a telephone interview with the New York Daily News. “I feel confident they’re not going to trade him before checking with us one last time and I think they think we’ve already made the best offer.”

Steinbrenner said the offer “does not include two of the three young pitchers” - Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy, from a group that also includes untouchable Joba Chamberlain - “but it’s still the best one. And let’s face it, we’re the best able to handle the kind of contract (extension) Santana will be after.”

The Boston Globe also had heard the same things we’ve been hearing: That different trade models: One led by Jacoby Ellsbury and another led by Jon Lester, remain in play.

I’m sorry that I’ve been unable to nail down all elements of each trade package. The best thing I read today was Steinbrenner suggesting that he’d like to get something done in two weeks. I can’t wait for this to end.

Anyway, here are some other Twins tidbits, courtesy of GM Bill Smith:

Jesse Crain, on the comeback trail following shoulder surgery in May, has been throwing some and is headed to Fort Myers, Fla. today to continue his rehab/recovery. Still, the Twins don’t know when Crain will be able to contribute, as coming back from a torn labrum and rotator cuff isn’t easy.

Francisco Liriano, who is expected to contribute at some point this season, is expected to travel to Fort Myers sometime this month to continue his comeback from Tommy John surgery. Everything to this point has gone well.

Juan Rincon, who wasn’t part of the Matt Garza-Delmon Young trade with the Rays because of concerns about his elbow, has been pitching for Lara of the Venezuelan winter league. In ten innings at the end of the season, Rincon had a 1.80 ERA on four hits, seven walks and nine strikeouts. He’s expected to pitch for Lara in the postseason, which began Wednesday.

I think it would be better to stop listening to him. Let’s face it, in Hank’s world (not to be confused with that annoying “It’s a Small World” ride at Disney World), along with most other Yanks fans, Johan Santana obviously wants to be a Yankee and he would be an ignorant fool to want to go elsewhere. This is the best team, with the best fans, with the best stadium, with the best ownership, with the best tradition, with the most championships. Not only does Johan obviously want to be a Yankee, but the Twins obviously think Phil Hughes and Jeff Marquez are going to be Ryan and Seaver.

So, my friend…in the end, it is upto Hank. If he wants Santana, he gets Santana. The Mets are doomed to play 2nd fiddle to the big bad Yanks.

Don’t know about you guys, but I’m scared.

Because The Redsox management have a connection and partnership with Bud Selig. Selig, and Henry are best friends. Sen.Mitchell act like a servant to these gentleman and are willing to their bidding.

Mets already have Pedro . This is the reason Why Omar sign him in the first place to be Mets Ace not #2 starter. Did you guys watch Wang's playoff perfomance against Indians? Is that called an Ace? I don't think. Besides Wang and Pettite in starting rotation, The Yankees are relying on young kids to contribute.

The Yankees are getting killed by resigning their own players from last year roster? The same roster that lost in the first round against Cleveland.

How come Alou and Castillo aren't getting kill by Fans ? The Mets did resign them and give them a contract extension.

The Big splash Omar trading Milledge for Scheinder and Church.

From Mets Fan

http://www.metsblog.com/2008/01/03/quote-yankees-to-make-decision-on-johan/#comment-74865

FireMetmanagement

That being said- if the Mets let Yankees get Santana (especially if it comes down to MONEY and Freddie Coupons cheaping out on the 6-7 year deal)…well then Freddie might as well either sell the team or move it to New Orleans or something. I mean the Mets have already lost most if not all of us due to the collapse (and nobody being held accountable for it) and also w/ the inactivity/dormancy the past 2 offseasons…but if the Yankees somehow get Santana and make another huge splash (w/ the Mets not having made a splash since Wagner over 2 years ago, and the NYY having made splash after splash over this same time…well, like I said, Freddie might as well just halt the construction on the new stadium and sell the team- cause he will lose us all.

Santana is not a “luxury” for the Mets - at this point, and given my comments above, Santans is all but a necessity. He would be a luxury for Boston, and for the NYY (somewhat)…but not for the Mets. Not with what happened last year, not with this pitching staff, not from a GM who has sat idly by and done nothing + make bad trades the last 2 offseasons. No way.

Hank to Twins: You have permission to trade me Santana

http://thesportshernia.typepad.com/blog/2008/01/hank-to-twins-y.html

Hank_give_minny_permission
Hank says its ok now for the Twins to give him Santana.

Hank Steinbrenner continued his coy negotiation tactics today regarding Johan Santana by sending subtle, cryptic messages through the media to Twins GM Bill Smith.

"We clearly have the best offer out there, everyone else's deal is total crap," Steinbrenner said while accidentally ashing in an intern's eye. "I told you guys exactly what we offered them right? Well lemme tell ya again, we offered them Hughes, Melky, Jeff Marquez and another prospect. So Bill, since we both know this is the best deal on the table, let's get this darn thing done. And even though you know by agreeing to a deal with me that I'm publicly making you look like a schmuck, you have permission to send Johan Santana to the New York Yankees."

His Hankness continued on for several minutes discussing the benefits of Santana playing in his galaxy.

"Also, why would Santana not want to come to New York? The Steinbrenner family has been in contact with various intergalactic space aliens and lifeforms over the years and they have all confirmed to us that New York is the Center of the Galaxy -- with Florida being an ok place too but not for championship baseball. What inferior cities are vying for Santana? I don't even know, I just know that we continue to have the best offer. And yes, I know that the Mets are technically in New York too, but c'mon they're in Queens, that's Albany to me. Get real."

Steinbrenner finished his always colorful statements with an update on Brian Cashman's bowel movements.

"Hey, any of you hacks been in the bathroom today? It's been freakin' stinking in there, and guess who it was -- it was Cash! The little fella has diarrhea. Who knew such a little guy could make up all that stink. Let's go down to his office and talk about gross stuff since he has such a queasy stomach. Whenever I say 'cheeseburger milkshake,' he always gets up and runs, it's hilarious!"

The window to Cashman's office was later boarded up with planks of wood and he's recently been diverting reporters trying to reach him with "good afternoon, Paisano's," the name of a popular Italian joint among Yankee employees and particularly Hank's father, George.

Hank Steinbrenner is tampering again

http://sonsofsamhorn.net/index.php?showtopic=26786&pid=1316643&st=0&#entry1316643

86Spike is a Redsox Fan- moaning and groaning about Hank's

We know that the Twins were pissed off back at the Winter Meetings when Hank commented on how he 'really wanted,
(and that should be clear to him, that we really want him)' Santana.

This is an even more egregious tamper. Selig needs to step in and slap Hank across the jowls for this behavior. The guy is damaging the Twins ability to trade Johan and hurting the position of other suitors like the Sox and Mets.

Hey 86 Spike Stfu. Don't Blame Hank, It was that Idiot NY Daily New Mccarron who call Hank about Santana and Hank answers all questions made by Mccarron.. As a Yankee Fan I'm sick of Hank. Hank doesn't know how to shut up and being as New owner of The Yankees in his first year.
